Update: October 5, 2026

The boats are now out of the water at the Collingwood Yacht Club and another sailing season is in the books.

However, that doesn’t mean you need to stop learning!

This November, NHSA will be offering the Sail Canada Coastal Navigation Courses. Basic Coastal Navigation will run Friday, November 6th from 6 pm – 9 pm, Saturday, November 7th from 9 am – 5 pm, and Sunday November 8th from 9 am – 5 pm. All sessions are in the classroom at 77 Simcoe St. #1.

Although we live in an age of technology, and at any given time, you can easily look at a screen to determine where you are, basic navigation skills are still important and it is necessary for us to preserve them so they don’t get lost in generations to come. Also, you won’t need to panic in the unfortunate event that your GPS and chartplotter go down because you will know exactly what to do!

The Basic Coastal Navigation course will teach you how to use all the publications that aid in navigation including reading CHS charts and the use of all tools. You will be able to convert headings/bearings between True, Magnetic, and Ship compass, then use that to plot a dead reckoning, two or three bearing fix, and how to clear danger bearings. Of course, we can’t ignore today’s technology, so there will be plenty of discussion of modern-day chartplotters as well as their many functions such as AIS.
