Basic Coastal Navigation

Learn the basic skills in coastal navigation and have the confidence to know how to navigate if/when your chart plotter fails. 

You will become proficient in basic chart plotting skills, position determination, and we will take the confusion out of danger bearings.

We will also discuss global satellite systems, chartplotters and their functionality.

This is also a prerequisite for the Sail Canada Intermediate Coastal Navigation Standard and highly recommended before taking the Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising course.

Intermediate Coastal Navigation

This Standard builds on the basic knowledge of navigation theory presented in the Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation Standard.


You will become proficient at dealing with currents, plotting running fixes, and passage planning.


This is also a prerequisite for the Sail Canada Advanced Cruising Standard and highly recommended before taking the Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising course.
